  24. We use and sell Sankyo.  We used to use Archive/Maynard drives 
  25. and starting having problems getting the drives serviced.  Sankyo 
  26. has been very reliable and service has not been an issue.

  28. Regarding service however, we are finding a number of 3rd party 
  29. service organizations who are in the business of refurbishing 
  30. drives.

  32. War stories:  Compaq WANGTEK SCSI drive which would not read SCO 
  33. installation tapes.  Had major problems with this and no help 
  34. from either Compaq or Wangtek.  Would not even admit the problem 
  35. existed.

  37. WANG DAT drive which caused system panics and data which could not 
  38. be verified with CTAR's bit level verify.  At this point, we are 
  39. avoiding DAT as a result of this experience.  I really think this 
  40. is a DAT drive driver issue, but unless a device is supported 
  41. really well in software, we tend to avoid it.

  43. Tape backup is just too critical an issue for us to ignore.  ALL 
  44. of the major disastors which we have been envolved with center 
  45. around faulty tape drives which appeared to backup but could not 
  46. restore, or errored out and the customer just did not do backups, 
  47. etc.  We have a fortune 500 customer lose 8 years of customer 
  48. data as a result of the staff not doing backups properly.

  50. FYI:  QIC drives are expensive, but not as bad as DAT drives.
