  25. There may be a timing problem when you start the tarcheck backup
  26. if you don't wait a bit after CTAR is done to allow the tape to
  27. rewind.  I put a 'sleep 120' in my nightly backup script to give
  28. the drive time to finish rewinding.

  30. :If I try to run the verify from the csave menu, then I get the 
  31. :error message pops up after a while and ctar asks if I should do 
  32. :error recovery.  If I reply with a yes, then the verify continues 
  33. :onward.  During the nightly backup/verify, I am assuming that 
  34. :ctar simply retries automatically.

  36. :This is an irritating, but not disasterous problem and only 
  37. :occurs with the tape drive.  I suspect that backing off the 
  38. :blocking factor to 20 rather than 64 might help, but am not sure.

  40. I use a blocking factor of 20 for two reasons.  First I can read
  41. the tapes with standard tar programs (SCO's didn't support
  42. blocking > 20 last time I looked).  Second on older Xenix systems
  43. the system slowed down drastically on some large blocking
  44. factors.  There didn't seem to be any significant speed penalty
  45. for using blocking of 20.
