- Blackberries can indeed be noxious as they spread everywhere via underground
- runners -- mine just appeared in my backyard and I did not know of their
- 'spreading' and 'thorn' properties (but I soon found out) -- I'm not that
- much a gardener. However, many homeowners around here will cut them down
- whenever they appear in their yards, but they are not banned. The ones I
- have I assume are wild -- stalks will grown up to 10 feet tall (if not cut
- down to a reasonable size during the growing season and I don't usually get
- to cut all of them) and can have diameters up to 2 inches. I'm only the one
- in the family who likes them enough to pick them, prune them, etc. Many people
- get blackberries by picking in patches in more rural areas (mine is suburban).
- I find it interesting that in the last several years blackberries have begun
- appearing in regular supermarkets here -- farmers have become aware of their
- desirability and I guess can keep them under control, unless they are
- growing a different variety.
