  15. Rashmi posted something about building blocks for girls. I walked
  16. through F.A. O Schwarz today & felt pretty grim about the offerings
  17. for kids. What I was looking for were little animal figurines, the kind
  18. that are hard and accurately molded. The store was full of huge stuffed
  19. animals, the kind you need to live in a mansion for. I imagine that
  20. a parent needs to feel a load of guilt to fork over the $100+ for one
  21. of these bears. They seem to sadly compensatory, that's what I mean.
  22. Beyond stuffed animals there's little more that isn't hypercolored
  23. plastic. Really, I found more satisfying selections in Dickson
  24. Brothers hardware store. (Martin, at 20 months, would love a
  25. trash can of his one, especially one with a swivel opening. That
  26. would be heaven for him.)

  28. Judith went to Mississippi? The things I miss when I tune out of
  29. Words-l for a month or two. I'll bet there are Words-lers out there
  30. who don't know who the hell I am.

  32. Martin, by the way, is still speaking one word at a time, but his
  33. vocabulary is expanding rapidly. Our au pair has got him calling
  34. apes (gorillas, mostly) "monkeys." She means well,and I
  35. haven't the heart to correct her. So when I take the little
  36. guy to the local Museum of Comparative Zoology, he points to the
  37. gorillas and says, "Monkey," and I have to live with that. He
  38. also seems to think that the statue of John Harvard is "daddy."
