- : Sorry if I gave the impression of disrespecting the Masons. I was

- : It is quite logical that a 33rd degree Mason, which the Pres. auto-
- : matically becomes -- ie. one of the grandest of the grand, would
- : be using the phrase. It is also quite logical, therefore, to find
- : Masonic influence in some key elements of US culture, like the back
- : of the green back. JFK's deliberate dissociation of himself from the
- : Masons, was just that -- not an attempt to put them down. They were,
- : up until recently at least -- if not still, quite anti-Catholic.

- Peter, you claimed that the automatic elevation of a President to the
- 33rd degree was a piece of common knowledge. I'll have to check with
- some Masons I know and verify that. The Masonic influence in US culture
- is no accident: George Washington and many of the other signers of the
- Constitution were Freemasons; the cornerstone laying for the Capitol
- was a Masonic rite, and there's a huge Washington Masonic Monument
- in Alexandria, Virginia. I don't know if it's that the Masons (or
- the YMCA, for that matter) that are anti-Catholic; the Catholics have
- anti-Protestant tendencies too, and organisations such as the Knights
- of Columbus and the Catholic Youth Organization exist as substitutes
- for the Masons and the Y. Patrick Buchanan's autobiography is full
- of praise for the CYO of his youth.
