  23. Politics is similar to chess. You don't appoint people because you
  24. have personal preferences, just like you don't move pieces because
  25. you like their form or shape. Everything is usually calculated to
  26. satisfy certain political interests. Personal feelings, no matter
  27. how strong, are usually put on hold.

  29. I think I can guess which of the following explanations of Bush's
  30. adventure in Somalia you are likely to choose:

  32.          a). President Bush wants to revive the New World
  33.              Order doctrine.
  34.          b). He wants to deflect world attention from Bosnia
  35.              to escape the pressure to intervene there.
  36.          c). It was dictated by Somalia's strategic location
  37.              (sea routes from the Mediterranian to the Indian
  38.              ocean). The former USSR had a Navy base on the
  39.              nearby Socotra island as well as an Air Force base
  40.              in Somalia itself.
  41.          d). The desire to have US troops not far away from the
  42.              explosive Middle East region. Iran seems to become
  43.              the next 'villain' there, needing constant attention.
  44.          e). Both Bush and Clinton seem to want to establish the
  45.              Rapid Deployment Force. The operation Restore Hope
  46.              is a good dress rehearsal for that.
  47.          f). President Bush wants to create a foreign policy
  48.              problem for Clinton.
  49.          g). The need to save starving children in Somalia.
