  13. On this feast of the Holy Innocents, I offer a sonnet I wrote many
  14. years ago.

  17.                A Sonnet for Holy Innocents

  20.         For voiceless nameless murdered in the sleep
  21.         before their first awaking, let my voice
  22.         serve to say "I believe", the tears I weep
  23.         for them be baptism, and my will's free choice
  24.         be choice to them that had none.  Any merit
  25.         of mine, evil suffered or good done,
  26.         account as theirs.  Let us as one inherit --
  27.         all dead in Adam -- the kingdom of thy Son.
  28.         Save us together!  Fill my desperate need
  29.         for purity by their pure mortal pain,
  30.         and use what I have, Bread and Church and Creed,
  31.         to raise and comfort these unkindly slain.
  32.         Them and me housel in one single host,
  33.         thou Mary's child, enfleshed by the Holy Ghost.
