- Steven, when I taught history at a Catholic high school, I wouldn't show R
- rated movies under any circumstances. Fortunately, the World War II movies I
- wanted to show (Patton, etc.) were all PG or G anyway. For my Psychology
- classes, however, I had wanted to show "Ordinary People," since the subject
- matter was perfect for juniors and seniors. I still solicited tons of parental
- opinions before showing it. Seventh graders are 12-13 years old, which is too
- young for that intense a film, IMHO.
-
- If you want a nice, informed argument, tell them that the MPAA 'R' was designed
- so that parents went to the movie with their kids rather than just dropping
- them off. The entire rating system revolves on the concept of parental
- guidance. If the school is not seeking parental guidance, they're out of line.
- And that's just the MPAA, not the Catholic rating.
-
- Does your parish have a lay school board? If so, I'd contact a member or two
- and sound them out on this. Normally a school board should stay out of
- curriculum decisions, but whether or not to show 'R' rated moves at the junior
- high level should be a policy decision within their purview. I'd see what
- other parents think about the issue, and if you have some direct support, go
- make an issue of this.
