  14. I remember what happened a few years ago which gave me a perspective on
  15. donations.  A Baptist church ran into some financial trouble and our Archbishop
  16. gave them some money.  This was at a time that churches were closing and other
  17. catholic charities did not have abundant funds.  When asked why he did this,
  18. the archbishop said, in effect, that it was not anybody else's busniess what
  19. he did with the money.  Needless to say, contributions dropped.

  21. I think that parishes have two problems.  1.  Most people don't know where the
  22. money goes so there is no feedback as to how much need there is.  2.  If they
  23. did know some of the places, they would actively cut the paltry sums they give
  24. now.

  26. Since I don't know the actual history, I have to go on some anecdotes from
  27. my parents, but in the past, the local church did a lot in the way of helping
  28. the poor, running schools, and anything leftover might go to missions or
  29. religous orders where it would directly do good.  Right now, if I want to
  30. support a soup kitchen, retired religous, or missions, I have to give directly
  31. to them.  Today, the dollars that go into the collection plate are equally
  32. likely to go into something non or pseudo catholic as to something that will
  33. bolster the Church.

  35. This is by no means a blanked indictment of all diosces or churches.  If you
  36. happen to be in a strong, traditional, healthy area you shoul give thanks for
  37. God's mercy.  My point is that there are lukewarm parishes that should not
  38. ask for more than lukewarm support, and those who desire to abandon orthodoxy
  39. that should not ask the faithful to participate in a self-destructive act,
  40. even financially.
