- As one of the members of my parish's council, I know for a fact that
- we don't turn anyone away from the parish grammar school (high school is
- by competitive exam diocese-wide - but all that WANT to go are accepted)
- for financial reasons. Perhaps that is why the parish is $700 K in the
- hole this year - which is how much was given to the school as a subsidy.
- The tuition is $1200. a year, parents have to work 2 bingos the entire
- year (and you would be surprised how many never show-in which case,
- $50. gets tacked on to the tuition--unless there is a good reason
- (single parent, work, etc.) ). If the parents can't afford the 1200.
- then other arrangements are made. Many children (~20% of the
- population) go for free. Another 15-20% are at reduced tuition. One of
- the duties of the Catholic Church is to educate its young. Being
- childless, I don't burden either system, I pay property taxes to a city
- where the public schools exhibit a 35% dropout rate, as well as
- support the parish schools. But guess which one (public or private)
- graduates more students that go to college and beyond at a cost of 50%
- of the other???
