- "You should judge each thing on its own merits," says wise Mr. Beer.
- I take the substance of maestro Zukerman's blast to be that the followers
- of Norrington et. al. are NOT doing that, but subscribing to a fad in
- place of using their ears to hear. The analogy of the emporer's new clothes
- would fit perfectly for what he is trying to describe.
- And again, I'm with Beer on the wait-and-see attitude; surely, if there's
- one thing the whole wild range of music in this century should show us that
- you cannot judge music by the means used to make it. I have heard some per-
- formances on original instruments which set new standards for wretchedness.
- Norrington's massacre of the Eroica is a case in point: he follows the
- metronome marking to the letter, but makes no attempt to speed up his own
- ears to the uncustomary tempo. Harnoncourt, on the other hand, makes a
- pretty fair case for the "new" interpretation, as he is very obviously
- listening his head off throughout. Case proven? Perhaps. I would say, with
- all due respect to a fine musician, that it strikes me as rather naive to
- think that people need an organized cultural movement as an excuse not to
- listen or feel; as phenomena as diverse as Boulez, Madonna, and Spielberg
- show, this little difficulty is pandemic just now.
