- Wow, I can't believe the line about "period instruments" on "early
- music" exploded like that. I hope my original quotes were right, I
- haven't seen the original Times article, but that was what my friend had
- reported.
-
- Roof quotes Zuckerman, and I don't know if Zuckerman would include Jordi
- Savall in that group, but from the sound of the bio on Savall, he is a
- specialist in medieval, renaissance and baroque musics. I think his
- performances for this film are damn happening.
-
- As for the period instrument business, Anner Bylsma uses "baroque cello"
- when he does Bach, and his cello suites are generally regarded as
- definitive. Not necessarily THE definitive, but they are a standard by
- which others are measured by the classical music community.
-
- My own view is that the period instruments people should be given a
- chance to come up with something. I don't know about the quality or
- lack of quality of what Zuckerman is talking about. He might be right.
- But others might come up with something good.
-
- I also like 20th century realizations of Bach. There are some by
- Schoenberg, Stravinsky, and Webern. Igor's don't do much for me,
- Arnolds's have moments, but Anton's are the greatest. Glenn Gould on
- piano.
-
- You should judge each thing on its own merits.
-
- Anti-intellectualism. Yes, that is Reagan.
