- Merry Christmas, alla youse allmusicers still hanging around!
-
- Spurred to a renewed interest in the piano because of various folks on this
- list and on JAZZ-L who play instruments, I've increasingly had the urge
- lately to start playing again. That, and the gorgeous baby grand sitting in
- my parents' den that I want to wheedle out of them :-) (Hasn't been used in
- quite a while unfortunately, and is in need of maintenance - I checked it
- today and only 22 keys played.)
-
- Now, I can't yet quite swing convincing my mom that her eldest son, her pride
- and joy, deserves to be bequeathed this instrument, when I've barely touched
- a keyboard in 10 years. I need to convince myself a wee bit too, before
- asking, that my interest is serious. To that end, I am thinking of getting an
- electronic keyboard so I can start playing. I *might* consider a used upright
- piano also, but I don't know what kind of price one goes for and whether it's
- worth it. As it happens, the December issue of Consumer Reports has an article
- on electronic keyboards. They rated the Yamaha PSR300 higher than any of the
- moderately priced boards. Well, knowing my own opinion of some of CR's tests,
- I want to do a little more research than that, and besides looking for reviews
- in musician-oriented magazines, I do plan on doing some in person trials at
- local instrument shops. The Yamaha unit should be available in the vicinity
- of $250, maybe less, and I can't really go any higher than that.
-
- So now I'm looking for opinions from any of you that know about such beasties.
- I definitely do want to play an actual piano at some point, with 88 keys,
- real piano sound, sensitivity to hand force, etc., and I know that will be
- mostly lacking in any electronic keyboard (particularly one I can afford),
- though I may also become interested in some of the 'high tech' features of the
- electronic units (he says, as he bangs away on his Mac :-). I'd appreciate any
- insights, tips, and so forth anyone cares to give.
-
- BTW, thanks mucho to Adam for posting Page McConnell's thesis on improv - it
- was very interesting to read, and is one reason I'm writing this note today!
