  22.         The only point is that if you take this to the limit then you allow
  23. a government (or whoever in charge of controlling funds) to decide what is
  24. art and what is not. Not so easy, neither so right!
  25.         Just to let you know, in Italy there is no funding at all for anything
  26. else than so-called "classical music". Jazz has been fighting for years to get
  27. into the public music schools, and no concert of what we love to call rock (in
  28. its many facets) will ever be supported by the government. The same applies
  29. for other arts, with due exceptions -- but in general the song doesn't change
  30. much.
  31.         The basic consequence of this is that an important section of our cul-
  32. tural life is financially depressed. This is experienced everyday: if somebo-
  33. dy goes and asks the Town Council to give funds for a rock concert which might
  34. put together 2,000 young people, well -- he usually faces shut doors. If the
  35. same person asks for money to play Vivaldi to 100 aficionados, it's silver and
  36. gold. There are exceptions, I repeat, but this is the usual pattern.
  37.         It's a really DIY over here, and everything is in the hand of men in
  38. the street who *love* something and try to make it work. But, so far, jazz,
  39. rock, pop, anything-different-from-classical-music is not considered culture.
