  12. Hey!  It's Zappa's b-day so somebody chime in on one of the finest composers
  13. ever to thumb his nose at society. One of the few musicians who might be
  14.  genuinely capable of being President, but who'd wanna?  In his autobiography
  15.  he talks about discovering his classical hero Edgard Varese in a stereo store;
  16.  The sales people apparently would use this screechy, bombastic careening
  17.  *music* as a sound tester to show people this new thing called "stereo
  18.  separation".  He apparently went in and asked where they got it, and they
  19.  just gave him the store copy.  After that, on a subsequent b-day (his 13th or
  20.  thereabouts) he asked as his present, to be allowed to *call* Varese long-
  21.  distance.  Can't remember if he got his wish.
