- I agree completely. Obviously U2 open themselves to criticism by choosing
- this form of expression -- but I think that if the best form of criticism
- you can come up with is "I think it's entirely self-serving. You know,
- while Bono is up there acting out being a rock star, he's still a rock
- star," then you might as well pack up and go home. The concept works on
- a multitude of levels. If it didn't do so, then arguments about self-
- promotion may have some validity. The reinvention of U2 so that the
- band becomes the message is clearly far less selfishly inspired than the
- reinvention of Madonna (so that the singer becomes a multi-millionairess).
- In a sense, the success of U2's self-promotion is essential to them making
- their point -- if they had failed to become so much bigger than life in
- the process, then it would have been evidence that their thesis about the
- media, technology, publicity and the operation of the system was somehow
- invalid. Their success in manipulating that system is the ultimate proof
- of concept!
-
- But let's not get too enthusiastic. Bear in mind that the reason we may
- never get to see this spectacular show in Australia is that U2 (and/or
- their management?) claim that they can't make it pay. If the message is
- so important, then surely they can afford to make a small loss? What
- about their fans over here? (This is U2, not TISM -- the abuse of the
- fans is *not* all part of the act!) In any case, it is hard to measure
- the impact of a tour in financial terms, because it sells albums -- not
- just the current one, but previous and future ones as well.
-
- On the basis of the special, I would almost be prepared to plan an overseas
- trip around seeing the show -- if I were planning an overseas trip anyway.
- Which I'm not.

- "This terminal is no more. It has ceased to be. It's expired and gone
- to meet its maker. This is a late terminal. It's a stiff. Bereft of
- life, it rests in peace. If you hadn't nailed it to the bench, it
- would be pushing up the daisies. It's run down the curtain and
- joined the choir invisible. This is an X-Terminal!"
