- The 1994 Australia Prize will be awarded in the field of Sustainable Land
- Management, the Minister for Science and Technology, Ross Free announced
- today.

- Among the topics that this field embraces are hydrology, water quality,
- pest control, farm size, soils, climate prediction, sustainable
- agricultural projects and total catchment management.

- "The selection of the field of sustainable land management places the 1994
- Prize in an area of international significance," Mr Free said.

- "The management of land resources is a matter of vital concern to all
- people. Careful and innovative husbandry of these resources is needed to
- preserve their productivity as well as the environment. Science and
- technology can play an important role in the development and application
- of successful management practices."

- The Australia Prize is an international award for an outstanding specific
- achievement in a selected area of science and technology promoting human
- welfare. The Prize, which was first awarded in 1990, is worth $250 000.

- The outcome of the 1993 Australia Prize, in sensory perception, will be
- announced in early 1993.
