  13. The 1994 Australia Prize will be awarded in the field of Sustainable Land
  14. Management, the Minister for Science and Technology, Ross Free announced
  15. today.

  17. Among the topics that this field embraces are hydrology, water quality,
  18. pest control, farm size, soils, climate prediction, sustainable
  19. agricultural projects and total catchment management.
  20.  
  21. "The selection of the field of sustainable land management places the 1994
  22. Prize in an area of international significance," Mr Free said.
  23.  
  24. "The management of land resources is a matter of vital concern to all
  25. people. Careful and innovative husbandry of these resources is needed to
  26. preserve their productivity as well as the environment. Science and
  27. technology can play an important role in the development and application
  28. of successful management practices."
  29.  
  30. The Australia Prize is an international award for an outstanding specific
  31. achievement in a selected area of science and technology promoting human
  32. welfare. The Prize, which was first awarded in 1990, is worth $250 000.

  34. The outcome of the 1993 Australia Prize, in sensory perception, will be
  35. announced in early 1993.
