  24. I believe Mr. Cowan is correct.  Sumner's entry in the Dictionary of American
  25. Biography mentions no schooling at all, and a reference to West Point is
  26. pretty much standard in that work for other Civil War figures who were
  27. graduates.  In 1819, the Academy was still fairly new, and small, and there
  28. was still plenty of room for the scions of wealthy or prominent families
  29. to go directly into the officer pool--kind of like the British army.

  31. Does anyone out there have ready access to an Academy roster so we can 
  32. make this definite?
