- I believe Mr. Cowan is correct. Sumner's entry in the Dictionary of American
- Biography mentions no schooling at all, and a reference to West Point is
- pretty much standard in that work for other Civil War figures who were
- graduates. In 1819, the Academy was still fairly new, and small, and there
- was still plenty of room for the scions of wealthy or prominent families
- to go directly into the officer pool--kind of like the British army.
