  17. Someone (like a kid eating shit) grinning the huge shameless grin of
  18. thoroughly enjoying doing something naughty, and carrying the
  19. implication that (as is often the case) the enjoyable activity is not
  20. only proscribed but dirty, childish, and definitely not grown-up.

  22. Biological note for non-parents: there is an age below which many
  23. things adults regard as repulsive, such as shit and soap, are not
  24. perceived as repulsive by the child, who can happily eat the stuff,
  25. grinning with a shit-eating grin which the (uneducated) adult finds
  26. not just inexplicable but outrageously improper. Hence the term.

  29. guesses by Americans rather than alternative opinions :-)
