  13. The following is an exerpt from the guidelines for creation of an alt
  14. group that specifically goes against Skip's reasons for wanting to
  15. create a new group for Amiga news s/w in alt:

  22.           be used for this purpose, and why the group should be in "alt"
  23.           rather than in one of the mainstream hierarchies (like

  25.           mainstream group creation procedure is not a very good
  26.           reason, groups should not be created in "alt" just because
  27.           it's easier.  Many sites do not get any alt groups, so if
  28.           you are proposing a serious group, it is worth the effort to
  29.           try to get it into a mainstream hierarchy.

  33. The free nature of alt makes it likely that at least several sites
  34. would carry any group that got created, but alt is not the appropriate
  35. place.

  37. Now, as to the need for creation of something like comp.sys.amiga.news.sw. 
  38. Starting from an "if it's not broken don't fix it" position, why does
  39. it need a separate group?

  41. Are there people who like to read about uucp who are getting annoyed
  42. by the volume of posts about news s/w (posts about creating new groups
  43. don't count :-) ? Are there people who are only interested in the news
  44. s/w who don't want to have to skip past the irrelevant posts about
  45. uucp? Is the traffic level in the uucp and uucp.patches group so high
  46. that it is hard to find and read only the articles you want? If uucp
  47. and news were in separate groups would cross posting be so high that
  48. it wouldn't make much difference from if they were still together?
  49. Would you read one group but not the other?

  51. If there are some good answers to those questions, then we should
  52. think about the creation of comp.sys.amiga.news.sw.

  54. Regardless, we should think about moving alt.sys.amiga.uucp* to
  55. comp.sys.amiga.uucp* for the wider distribution.
