  22. Laura, I would think twice about a skirt in velvet. Unless you use
  23. cotton velvet which doesn't have much pile (and isn't very lustrous)
  24. you will crush the pile where you sit down, and have a strange looking
  25. spot on your rear end while standing up.

  27. I just finished an evening dress of velvet (the bodice was velvet, and
  28. the skirt was silk).  I discovered that velvet isn't all that hard to
  29. work with, but I kept two things in mind: steam press it very gently
  30. (don't ever actually touch the iron to the pile of the velvet), and handle
  31. the velvet as little as possible.

  33. Oh wait, : one other very noticeable thing...  when sewing two pieces of
  34. velvet together they will try to work apart as you sew (this is due to
  35. the pile).  I used two different methods for holding it steady, 1) pin basting
  36. on the seam allowance (this is where you use pins lengthwise along the 
  37. seam line to act like hand basting. don't sew over the pins.), and 
  38. 2) I sometimes hand basted the seams before I sewed them on the machine.  
  39. Then while sewing, periodically pick up the presser foot and allow the 
  40. layers to relax.
