- Hey all,
-
- I was flipping through the group and there was a post from Ray in Cleveland
- which basically asked if anyone on this group ever got any responses from
- posting their ads, and it made me think about it. How many of you out there
- can honestly make a judgement on someone based on a *very* brief summary of
- the person making a post?
-
- When life was primitive and folks were restricted to posting personals in the
- papers, they had to be brief because the newspaper people would charge them
- FOR EVERY SINGLE WORD, SPACE, LINE AND SYLLABLE and so it is understandable
- that most people would keep it brief. But here, (okay so maybe you are
- costing the net $$$, but besides that) I think there is much more freedom
- to be had in describing yourself. There are a lot of posts which look like:
-
- Me: ____ _____ _____ _____
- You: ____ ____ ____ ____
-
- which doesn't tell me or anyone anything about the person posting, other than
- those same concrete facts like age and height...in other words quantitative
- things which tell us nothing about the real person behind the keyboard. This
- is the reason why sometimes I think the flamers are actually *good* for the
- purpose of this group (someone mentioned this before, methinks) because the
- nature of their banter reveals a lot about the kind of person they are. If
- someone really really wants to get some responses to their ad, in addition
- to the general information (hard facts) they should tell a short anecdote
- about themselves, which lets others know what kind of person they are. A
- post here is like a resume for a relationship (encounter, experience?), and
- if you were going to find a job, your resume wouldn't just be
-
- Me: 20, Can Type & Lift Heavy Things
- You: Any Employer Looking to Hire
-
- it would have a personal statement or something like that attached to it.
- In order to get some type of positive response on this group, a posting has
- to be unique; it has to have more than ___ ISO ___, because in a group with
- so many of this type, who would stop specifically on yours, and moreover,
- why, unless they knew enough about you to make a judgement, roll the dice,
- and take the gamble?
