- Wondering if anyone else has listened to Mano Negra (Franco-Spanish
- band -- 'King of Bongo', 'Putas Fever'), and if so, do you think it is ska-
- influenced. The first song I heard of theirs (forget what it was) I
- immediately asked the friend who was playing it, 'Is this French SKA?'
- Then I heard some other cuts which are more like straight rock, rap, etc.
- It's pretty hard to classify, but some of it sure sounds like French
- and Spanish ska. Whatever it is, it's good.
-
- BTW, glad to have the new group. I caught The Selector performance with
- Skanking Pickle last summer in SF, and just missed the Special Beat there
- by about a week. I don't know what some of you were saying about ska
- being dead, but it seems to me there's a revival just picking up steam.
- (Which is good for me, 'cause I didn't discover ska until after the boom
- of the early '80s was over -- Madness & English Beat broken up, etc.)
-
- There was a fair ska band here in Hawaii called Mr. Simon, but they just
- disbanded this summer, so nothing really happening locally, as far as I
- know.
