- Not a bad place to start, you do get songs from just about every album,
- plus a pretty good example of the medley of 60's/70's classics that became
- a staple at Dregs (and Steve Morse Band) concerts. But the playing somehow
- isn't quite up to par with my memory of Dregs shows, except Steve Morse's
- guitar and Rod Morgenstein's drums (the two always meshed like hand and
- glove). Maybe it's just the recording, I don't know. I know the violin has
- sounded better, maybe Alan Sloan's just very rusty, or maybe he just pales
- in comparison to Mark O'Conner, who appeared on the last 2 studio albums.
- If you've never heard the band I doubt this album will turn you off, and
- once you're hooked you can check out the whole catalog.
-
- The Dregs released 6 studio albums before breaking up. Between then and
- the recent reunion there also appeared a couple of compilations on CD -
- the names escape me now. Maybe these would be more representative starters
- than the live set. Anyway, of the 6 studio releases:
-
- 1. Free Fall 4. Dregs of the Earth
- 2. What If 5. Divided We Stand
- 3. Night of the Living Dregs 6. Industry Standard
-
- My personal favorite is #2. It shows off the group's versatility more than
- any other, and Steve Morse's chops were pretty well mature by that point.
- Most of my friends who are Dregs fans would agree with me on that one. A
- *close* second for me is #4 (which probably *rocks* more than the others),
- followed by #3, #1, #5, #6. To my knowledge, only the last of these is
- unavailable on CD. If anyone knows otherwise I'd be glad to hear it!
