- I just got The Great Deceiver (I'd been putting it off a bit 'cause of $,
- but my girlfriend gave it to me for xmas). Pretty good stuff so far; my
- only complaint has to be the dumb-ass package form factor -- a fat longbox
- fits neither on a 12x12 record shelf or a 6x6 CD shelf. Oh, well...
-
- Fripp is unexpectedly generous toward bootlegs in his opening comments in
- the accompanying book(let). His statement that "there are currently 120
- King Crimson bootlegs available", though, took me by surprise. The 1990
- edition of Hot Wacks (Book XIV), generally regarded as the authoritative
- reference on boots, lists about 30. There are most certainly more, and
- "new" material is constantly surfacing as a new wave of 'leggers presses
- their wares on CD. Given the limited information available to me, though,
- I undertook to do a little cross-referencing, in an effort to find out
- which of The Great Deceiver's tracks, if any, had appeared elsewhere.
-
- Hot Wacks lists only one corresponding date:
-
- Heretic
- TAKRL 1968 (The Amazing Kornyfone Record Label)
-
- Side 1: The Night Watch 4:35
- Starless 11:38
- Easy Money 5:55
-
- Side 2: Great Deceiver 4:08
- Lament 4:01
- Exiles 5:48
- 21st Century
- Schizoid Man 9:10
-
- Excellent Stereo
- Pennsylvania State U. Jan. 29 '74
-
- The date is obviously a typo. According to Fripp's notes it should be
- June 29, 1974. TAKRL, no longer around, was a reliable producer of quality
- vinyl. Their disks are getting increasingly hard to find. If you know of
- a copy of this record that I can get my hands on, please let me know.
-
- In Paris in September, I also found the following (at an INCREDIBLE shop --
- more "live" CDs (at good prices) than I've seen anywhere else:
-
- Atmosphere
- Beech Marten BM035
-
- Great Deceiver 3:14
- Lament 4:12
- The Night Watch 4:34
- Starless & Bible Black 11:38
-
- Stanley Theater, Pittsburg (sic) PA, April 29, 1974
-
- The remainder of this disk is September 2nd, 1984 Le Spectrum (Montreal)
- concert.
-
- It would thus seem that Fripp has done a pretty good job as far as providing
- material not previously available.
-
- P.S. Does anyone know for sure what the date of recording of "U.S.A." was?
- Best I can figure it must have been the June 28th, 1974 Asbury Park
- concert. If that's not the case, it was probably the June 30th
- Providence material that comprises disk 1 of "Deceiver".
