- You are quite correct - traditional "tunes" can not be copyrighted as long as
- it can be proven that they were indeed in the "public domain". During the 60's
- many otherwise respectible Folk Singers grabbed up public domain material and
- copyrighted it with little or no change to the structure.
- Simply Gifts carries no copyright in it's original form. There have been a
- few enterprising scum who have added words or verses and then attempted to
- copyright the resulting piece and "original material".
- The song was sung in Shaker communities well before the Civil War.
