- SD> On <13 Dec 92 11:37>, Joe Bethancourt scribbled the following to
- SD> Usenet:
- JB> But take a look at it: it is strings
- JB> mounted on a drum-head....and this
- JB> should be a pretty good indicator that the banjo is a PERCUSSION

- SD> Of course, any jazz musician or afficionado must note that drums,

- We aren't forgetting the hammer-stroke are we? Let me tell you,
- properly executed by a bassist in his prime, wave bye-bye to your
- toupe and THEN tell me it's not a percussive explosion of sound. Also,
- there's always col legno (striking the string with the stick instead
- of the bow hair), there's spiccato which is a light 'off-the string'
- sounding bouncing of the bow on the string which makes it sound like
- you're striking the string with the hair, although properly executed,
- the hair never quite leaves contact with the string, and lastly, there
- are a few *actual* off-the-string bowing sound effects that are almost
- like plucking the string with a quick pressure and flick of the bow or
- an actual striking of the string with the bow hair.
-
- Not to mention that the upper shoulders and ribs make a nice resonant
- 'bongo' sound when the urge to strike strikes me. There....suitably
- chastened yet?

- ... Or will I have to BEAT it into you?
