  19. The Monks of Doom are Victor Krummenacher, Greg Lisher, and Chris Pedersen
  20. (bassist, guitarist, and drummer) from Camper Van Beethoven, plus David
  21. Immergluck from the Ophelias.

  23. Cracker is David Lowery (lead singer/vocalist) from Camper Van Beethoven,
  24. plus Johnny Hickman, Davey Faragher, and Josef Peters (none of whom seem to
  25. be from any big bands in particular...).

  27. Other CVB alumni include Jonathan Segel, who's in Hieronymous Firebrain (as
  28. well as Sideways, although I've never heard anything by them or even _of_
  29. them except for John Relph's excellent discography available for FTP at
  30. cs.uwp.edu).

  32. And Morgan Fichter, who's in the Wellsprings of Hope.

  34. Chris Molla also was a key member, but no one on the net seems to know what
  35. he's up to now.

  37. J. Segel is chummy with the Monks.  Their two bands have toured together,
  38. and Victor, Chris, and Jonathan all play together with Eugene Chadbourne at
  39. random intervals (along with a few other people).

  41. I'm not sure if Morgan is "allied" with one side or another in the Monks v.
  42. Cracker skirmish.  I'd use the word 'acrimonius' to describe the CVB split,
  43. but that word is reserved by the music press for the Pink Floyd/Roger Waters
  44. split, sorry.

  46. I'm not sure if David Immergluck is still friendly with David Lowery.  On
  47. the "Happy Birthday to Me" single by Cracker, the b-side is credited to
  48. Lowery/Immergluck, the song being "James River."  But I seem to recall (it's
  49. not in the room with me...) that there isn't a date, so it's hard to tell if
  50. this is an old song or a new one.  A new song by the two would be a bit odd,
  51. I think.

  55. By the way, after listening to Cracker's _Tucson_ EP, I really like them.
  56. I'd say it's better than most anything on the Monks' latest disc, _Forgery_.
  57. This may come as a suprise to those who have have seen my previous usenet
  58. postings, which have uniformly bashed Cracker and praised the Monks.  Still,
  59. I'm not willing to concede anything wrt/ Cracker's debut and the Monks'
  60. _Meridian_ or the _Insect God_.  These Monks albums are good, and it pains
  61. me to see a large section of the music press gush all over Cracker and esp.
  62. David Lowery and completely fail to notice that the Monks have been humming
  63. along for a while now, putting out good music.  Unfortunately for my
  64. argument, they've shot themselves in the foot with _Forgery_.  It's not bad,
  65. but pretty bland.
