- Anybody out there know anything about playing guitar with a drumstick? Has
- anyone seen this done? I've been playing around with this concept and have
- developed quite a percussive style. I would however like to see (and hear)
- what other people have attempted...
-
- I think something about this went by in alt.guitar.bass a while back.
-
- Anyway, years ago I found I could duplicate the rhythm guitar part of
- Devo's "Come Back Jonee" by playing the chords normally with my left
- hand and bouncing a drum stick off the strings with my right hand at
- the point where I usually pick. I used the usual rock drumstick grip
- and pointed the stick downwards. The bouncing was essential to get
- the correct rhythm (and-a-one, and-a-two, and-a-three, and-a-four),
- but it was kind of tricky to get the rhythm to come out exactly (in
- fact, if you listen to Devo play this, the rhythm tends to vary a
- bit). It's a neat effect, since all the notes of the chord sound at
- once instead of being arpeggiated somewhat as in strumming.
-
- Curiously, every time I have seen Devo perform this song, Bob 2 strums
- the part. But on the record, the lack of arpeggiation and the
- crispness of the attack make it sound like he's using a drumstick,
- especially in comparison to the chords in the intro which clearly
- sound strummed.
