- I was watching KPIX-TV news on Dec. 31, 1983, when the ignorant blow-dried
- newscreature mentioned that we were about to start the year 1984, in which
- (he said), George Orwell warned us that computers would be a danger to the
- world, blah blah blah. Of course, anyone who's ever read _1984_ knows
- that computers are not even mentioned in the book (except perhaps for the
- "speakwrite", which plays a very minor role). The motion picture had a
- lot of nice touches capturing the low-tech nature of the society portrayed
- in the book, such as the rotary dials on the mechanical device for calling
- up old newspaper isues, and the black-and-white telescreens. No 'puters.

- So "heard that on KPIX" should be a contender for AFU motto-of-the-whatever.
