- What does "sum" have to do with multiplication?

- sum- The amount obtained as a result of adding.
- product- The amount obtained as a result of multiplication.

- This confusion brings to mind the problem of "by" and "into",
- which, depending on the origin of the speaker, could each mean
- either multiplied by or divided by. Indians (Dravidic) always
- seem to use the two in opposite sense to Americans.
