  11.     I work at the Rising Sun Bakery, a small, hippie-owned
  12. place popular with upper-middle-class, party-giving types.
  13. Last week, I assisted the head baker in making (the horror, the
  14. HORROR) 120 POUNDS of fruitcake.  We then charged $7 a pound
  15. for it...and it all sold.
  16.     Why?  To Who?  I have no idea.  Maybe it's a bizarre
  17. southern gentry thing.  Maybe it's a stoic, Hemingwayesque
  18. test of how truly you're in the holiday spirit- if you can
  19. still smile and say thank you and mean it when you've unwrapped
  20. your third cake, you get a plaque somewhere?  All I know is, I
  21. start to shake whenever I see dried fruit now.  And
  22. cherries...dont get me started about the cherries...
