- You want the truth about fruitcake? The real story?
- I work at the Rising Sun Bakery, a small, hippie-owned
- place popular with upper-middle-class, party-giving types.
- Last week, I assisted the head baker in making (the horror, the
- HORROR) 120 POUNDS of fruitcake. We then charged $7 a pound
- for it...and it all sold.
- Why? To Who? I have no idea. Maybe it's a bizarre
- southern gentry thing. Maybe it's a stoic, Hemingwayesque
- test of how truly you're in the holiday spirit- if you can
- still smile and say thank you and mean it when you've unwrapped
- your third cake, you get a plaque somewhere? All I know is, I
- start to shake whenever I see dried fruit now. And
- cherries...dont get me started about the cherries...
