- The numbers and letters do, in fact correspond to the Federal Reserve Bank
- that issues the note. The large black letter that appears in the middle of
- the Federal Reserve Bank seal (the black seal to the left of the portrait),
- the letter at the beginning of the serial number, and the four black numbers
- that appear towards each of the four corners, but still within the white
- area of the bill, all correspond to the issuing Federal Reserve Bank. The
- banks are numbered (and lettered in the order in which they were
- established. An incomplete list of the banks (going by what I presently
- have in my wallet) follows:
-
- Boston, MA 1 A
- 2 B
- 3 C
- Cleveland, OH 4 D
- 5 E
- 6 F
- Chicago, IL 7 G
- 8 H
- 9 I
- 10 J
- 11 K
- San Francisco, CA 12 L
-
-
- I seem to remember that 12 (L) is as high as they go, and that New York was
- 2 (B), but without notes in front of me, I can't say for sure. Perhaps
- others will fill in the missing bank locations. Anyway, the main point is
- that the 11-K markings on a 1963 series note (or any other Federal Reserve
- Note) has no significance beyond indicating the branch of the Federal
- Reserve that issued it.
