- Another wrinkle to Elevated Trains. Manhattan used to have an elevated train
- above Third Avenue. A few years before WWII, after the subways were replacing
- more of the elevated trains in Manhattan, the local city government called for
- the dismantling of the monstrous Third Avenue Elevated Train. What to do with
- the steel? It turns out NYC put all of it on several cargo ships and sold
- all of it to Japan, who was HUNGERING for all the precious steel they could
- get for their various war plans, including China.
- After Pearl Harbor, U.S. military intelligence couldn't figure out why
- some of the crashed Zeros, and dud-bombs had bolts with the occassional
- Steel-U.S.A. stamped and molded impressions. It turns out that NYC's steel
- sale had been conducted without full Federal knowledge, but almost all of the
- steel had been melted down in Japan, with exception to a few bolts and nuts.
- It took several more crashed zeros, well into the war, for military
- intelligence to figure out what had happened. It was said Eisenhower had
- a near heart-attack when he found out New York City was responsible for
- bringing Japan into the war a lot sooner than they would have normally been
- able to.
