- < :Hello,
- < :It's me again ...I want some information about
- < :a wonderful shaped fish called:BARACUDA....
- < :If you have any information about habitats of
- < :this fish,please call me....
-
- I'm no expert on this species but did fish for them about 4 years ago
- during a vacation in Cuba. Our first mate rigged what looked like 8"
- shiners. I brought along a Muskie plug (big wooden Suick), they
- laughed upon seeing it but obligingly put it out.
-
- The Captain was trolling very quickly and asked him to slow down and
- within a minute........BANG! An 18 lb. 'Cuda Smacked it! (this brought
- the smile off their faces).
-
- It totally destroyed the Lure, believe the Carribean/Gulf of Mexico
- is their Territory but wouldn't be surprised of they are available in
- other waters.
-
- The rod/reel was a very old Penn combination and their teeth are
- unbelievable (1/2" and Razor Sharp). There were two species that we
- caught (some had two Fangs on the upper lip and a single on the lower
- and vice versa for the other).
-
- We kept one for the table and had the Cuban's prepare it (Grilled or
- BBQ, couldn't tell) and very neutral tasting (good thing as I don't
- like Fish) with a firm and fleshy meat.
-
- I couldn't accurately gauge what their Fighting tendencies are like
- since the monofilament was the thickest I've ever seen (surely 80+lb.
- test). I tried to back off the drag but the drag washers were severely
- worn and it was either ON or OFF. The rods were about as pliable as
- pool cues. I'd guess that an enraged Chinook Salmon is a better
- Sportfish but it's tough to gauge since I run 16 lb. test and a fairly
- complaint rod.
-
- They are long and slender (reminds me of a Pike) and we didn't hit
- into anything that exceeded 20lbs. My lasting impression is of their
- Teeth, long and Very Sharp.
-
- Regards
- Marv
-
- PS I did encounter Barracuda while snorkeling and it was a Scary
- experience. They are a "curious" species, kept coming closer to
- "check me out". My immediate reaction was to "get the hell out
- of there", my fishing experience dictated that I FREEZE.
- The five footer that wanted to get close, got too close (egads
- talk about Teeth), I gently nudged him away and (Thank Goodness)
- he co-operated and swam away. I guess I was "boring".....;-)
