  11. On the back of scratch paper from a campus recycling area, I found a
  12. psychological test called the Bem Sex Role Inventory. This test lists
  13. sixty adjectives that refer to human beings, some "masculine," some
  14. "feminine," and some neutral (but you don't know which are which until
  15. you complete the test). You are asked how well these adjectives describe
  16. you; and whether you assign yourself a preponderance of masculine or
  17. feminine adjectives, determines your "sex type."
  18.  
  19. The fact that I found this test, suggests that it was in use some time
  20. in the past ten years. I am curious when and how it was devised, whether
  21. it's still in use, and for what clients it's intended.

  23. Following are the adjectives of significance in this test.
  24.  
  25. Feminine: yielding, cheerful, shy, affectionate, flatterable, loyal,
  26. feminine, sympathetic, sensitive to the needs of others, understanding,
  27. compassionate, eager to soothe hurt feelings, soft spoken, warm, tender,
  28. gullible, childlike, does not use harsh language, loves children,
  29. gentle.

  31. Masculine: self-reliant, defends own beliefs, independent, athletic,
  32. assertive, strong personality, forceful, analytical, has leadership
  33. abilities, willing to take risks, makes decisions easily,
  34. self-sufficient, dominant, masculine, willing to take a stand,
  35. aggressive, acts as a leader, individualistic, competitive, ambitious.
