  18. I believe that the Silmarillion has a passage where it says that 
  19. early elves were captured by Melkor and tormented in his dungeons, and
  20. that soon after the first orcs appeared.  Other elves made the 
  21. assumption that they were corrupted elves.  (Sorry I don't have
  22. the book present, or I would quote.)
