  26. Yes. Middle of last week the phone behind his desk rang. The person on
  27. the other end was from CBS and was mistaking Leno for Dave. Actually
  28. it was a pretty poor bit, and seemed to bomb among the live audience,
  29. but I found it reasonably humorous.

  31. In general, Jay's been far from quiet on the issue. He also has
  32. complained in interviews that not *once* since he started has any NBC
  33. exec at any level, patted him on the back and said he was doing a good
  34. job.  Or, "you're are man" or anything like that. He says that if NBC
  35. screws him, and he acts pretty sure they will, he's gone. Possibly
  36. even, he says, to CBS to compete against Dave if Dave stays with NBC.

  39. The thing with firing his manager, Kushnik, as executive producer
  40. already had him on edge (he was close to leaving just over that
  41. alone). So I'm not sure why people think he *wants* to stay even if
  42. NBC *doesn't* axe him. I don't think there will be a great Letterman
  43. vs. Leno ratings battle. No matter how it comes down, I just don't see
  44. it. NBC is already convinced, too late, that Leno has already lost the
  45. time slot if it's Leno against Dave. TV is too cynical to play with
  46. that even for a few weeks. Dave either stays and Leno goes. Or Dave
  47. leaves and Leno goes. That's how I see it. (Mark my words.)
  48. Dana Carvey could get the Tonight Show. Maybe the talk with him's
  49. been that direction all along. All kinds of strange stuff could happen,
  50. you guys just watch.

  52. But I'm with Dave all the way. I was with him when he was standup.  I
  53. was with him in the morning. I was with him the first night Late Night
  54. went on, and for the first season when I'd say to people: "Have you
  55. caught Late Night? It's *funny*." and people didn't know what I was
  56. talking about.
