- Polygraphs aren't lie detectors, they're stress/fear detectors, and
- unreliable ones at that. I know of people who, when faced with the "magic"
- of a polygraph, simply confessed. In one study I read (disputed by poly-
- graph manufacturers), the accuracy was in the 70% range - that is, just
- 20% or so above pure chance. What was more disturbing was that most of the
- errors were false positives, that is, the operator thought the subject
- was lying when he or she was telling the truth. This apparently occurred
- in some people more than others, presumably those who were nervous about
- being polygraphed in the first place.
-
- Back before Texas woke up to these facts and banned the practice, I had to
- take a polygraph test as a condition of employment. That's when I looked
- up these studies and found out the useful information that people who
- have practiced mental control exercises (such as yoga, meditation, etc.)
- could fool polygraphs much more often than others. When I went in for
- the test, I was surprised to find that the tester only measured respira-
- tion rate and pulse rate, but NOT blood pressure or galvanic skin response
- as in the more reliable polygraphs referred to in the studies I had read.
- All I did was concentrate on my breathing, try not to *think* about the
- questions being asked but just answer automatically, and relax as much
- as possible.
-
- I lied through my teeth and passed with flying colors.
-
- If you don't pass, you could always dispute the results and ask them
- to repeat the test. As I said, I think that testers often rely on
- intimidation to elicit confessions rather than the polygraph results
- themselves.
