  49. Humm .... I wonder then why there is more people on welfare per capita here
  50. than in Great Britain and at least 10 times more violent crime here than
  51. there. Why do some people worry so much about not getting their fair share
  52. of the pie (actually having to give less than 1 percent of your income too
  53. those lazy poor people). We should all hate them like Rush Limbaugh. (-:

  55. Seriously though when one considers the social and economic costs we have
  56. been paying for drug prohibition, underfunded education, and the whole
  57. military industrial complex thing the total cost of the welfare budget
  58. seems to me to pale in insignificance. My mother's father died when she
  59. was about 2 years old. Her mother raised 2 small children in Utah. In the
  60. winter she remembers not having coal to heat the house or have warm water
  61. to bathe in. They often lived on bread and milk but they survived.
  62. Fortunately the democrats were in power at the time.

  64. Drugs don't cause people to go on welfare. They're the symptom - not the
  65. problem. If this were not true how could the rest of us partake and still
  66. lead reasonably normal lives. O.K some people have a "disease" that causes
  67. them (through no fault of their own of course and independant of any other
  68. problems they might have in their lives) to lose control of all body
  69. function and rationality if drugs are involved. BTW if this is true why
  70. is it a crime to use any drug?

  72. I say (impending flames not withstanding) irresponsible drug use would decline
  73. significantly if we really seriously addressed some other problems in this
  74. society. Giving those unfortunate enough to be stuck in a bad place enough
  75. help so that they have a chance to get out strikes me as a good place to
  76. start. Every other developed country in the world does this better than the
  77. U.S.
