  51.  In some ways, I think the potency of LSD to be a moot point in the case
  52. of mescaline. The synthetic precursors are very easy to prepare. It _can_
  53. be done from gallic acid(or even tannin and)MeI or Me2SO4 followed by
  54. reaction with HCL followed by KCN followed by reduction. (Thionyl chloride
  55. is not necessary to form the benzyl chloride because the hydroxy is
  56. activated by the aromatic ring, but I realise that I forgot the step of
  57. reduction to the alcohol. This is the step where the yield usually drops
  58. under varying reaction conditions... See J Am Chem Soc 73, 1353 (1951).)
