  24. Here is the scoop on "Medline" *as I'm aware of it*
  25. (back off! damnable flamesters!)

  29. Medline is one of many databases available through the Universtiy of Cal.'s
  30. "Melvyl" catalogging system, which contains citations on materials available
  31. at all UC schools.  It also allows access to lots of other cool databases
  32. (although my project [blurb mode on] InfoPath allows cooler "gopher" conn-
  33. ections to Melvyl and lots more [blurb mode off]).  I think it may be
  34. available through other electronic systems, but that's the way I know of
  35. it.  Access is restricted though, so not everyone can get it.

  37. To look at Melvyl, telnet to melvyl.ucsd.edu (192.35.222.222).
  38. To see if you can get access to Medline, type "set db medline" once you're
  39. in.  I have a feeling you'll get a password prompt, though.

  41. If you are at or near a research university, you can usually get access
  42. merely be virtue of being on campus.

  59. Use the MEDLINE database to retrieve citations and abstracts for articles
  60. published in approximately 4,000 medical and life sciences journals.  MELVYL
  61. MEDLINE is also useful for medical aspects of social sciences topics.

  63. As of 12/22/92, the database contains 1,712,209 citations indexed by the
  64. National Library of Medicine from January 1988 - present.  Updates are added
  65. weekly.  For other statistics, type SHOW MED STATS.

  67. It is also possible to search by title for periodicals held by the UC
  68. campuses, and other California libraries.  Use the PERIODICALS database to
  69. search by other access points.  Type EXPLAIN PE DATABASE for more information.
