- [posting for the info impaired]
- Here is the scoop on "Medline" *as I'm aware of it*
- (back off! damnable flamesters!)
-
- See the bottom of this post for Melvyl's blurb on Medline.
-
- Medline is one of many databases available through the Universtiy of Cal.'s
- "Melvyl" catalogging system, which contains citations on materials available
- at all UC schools. It also allows access to lots of other cool databases
- (although my project [blurb mode on] InfoPath allows cooler "gopher" conn-
- ections to Melvyl and lots more [blurb mode off]). I think it may be
- available through other electronic systems, but that's the way I know of
- it. Access is restricted though, so not everyone can get it.
-
- To look at Melvyl, telnet to melvyl.ucsd.edu (192.35.222.222).
- To see if you can get access to Medline, type "set db medline" once you're
- in. I have a feeling you'll get a password prompt, though.
-
- If you are at or near a research university, you can usually get access
- merely be virtue of being on campus.
-
- OK oh gods of the internet, fill in the blanks I've left.
-
- Disclaimer: UCSD hasn't caught up with me (yet), so be a pal and don't
- let them in on me, hmm?

- (and giving out InfoPath: telnet infopath.ucsd.edu (132.239.50.100)
- login as "infopath"
- or gopher sdacs.ucsd.edu 70 for the gopherized among us)

- Melvyl's Medline help screen:
-
- MELVYL MEDLINE Database
-
- Use the MEDLINE database to retrieve citations and abstracts for articles
- published in approximately 4,000 medical and life sciences journals. MELVYL
- MEDLINE is also useful for medical aspects of social sciences topics.
-
- As of 12/22/92, the database contains 1,712,209 citations indexed by the
- National Library of Medicine from January 1988 - present. Updates are added
- weekly. For other statistics, type SHOW MED STATS.
-
- It is also possible to search by title for periodicals held by the UC
- campuses, and other California libraries. Use the PERIODICALS database to
- search by other access points. Type EXPLAIN PE DATABASE for more information.
-
- To begin searching, type: START MED to clear all previous results.
- SET DB MED to retain any saved results.
-
- In Experimental mode, the MEDLINE backfiles are available, covering citations
- from 1966 through 1987. Type SHOW EXP 53 for information on the Experiment
- in adding backfiles. Type EXPLAIN MB for information on MEDLINE backfiles.
