-
- "There are enough toxins in potatoes to kill you if you eat 7 tons in one
- day." Wayne McDougall, BCNU
-
- Now, I've heard that potatoes, being members of *Solanaceae*, contain very
- small amounts of tropane alkaloids (atropine, hyoscyamine, scopalamine). If
- that is the case, the "LD50" for 'taters would not be particularly high. Not
- as high as, say, the "LD50" for Doritos or Cap'n Crunch.
-
- I've also head that many people are sensitive to potatoes, and tomatoes, as
- well (another solanaceous plant). With all due respect to Mr. McDougall, I
- think that the maximum safe dosage of potatoes should be lower. I would
- cautiously suggest that nobody eat more than 20 kg (44.1 lbs) of potatoes at
- a time, unless they have a proven sensitivity to this substance. Then, of
- course, they should eat less.
-
- As for Cap'n Crunch and Doritos, 50 kg (110.5 lbs) seems to be a good figure
- to work from. With the Cap'n Crunch, remember that you can O-D from the form
- of Vitamin D they add to milk (ergocalciferol, or D-3).
-
- Thank you for your time, and remember, Know When To Say When.
