  42. with Dr. Sarfatti's work because I have been researching a piece contracted
  43. for OMNI, a science magazine, on the interface between quantum physicists
  44. (especially those interested in nonlocality and the role of consciousness
  45. in the measurement process) and parapsychology. Dr. Sarfatti's theories
  46. have implications for the "paraphysics" research being conducted at SRI
  47. International, the Mind Science Foundation, the Institute for Advanced
  48. Studies at Austin, and the Princeton Engineering Anomalies Research

  52. Since I am not a physicist, I cannot fully evaluate Dr. Sarfatti's
  53. theories. But certain features of his approach have impressed me. In
  54. particular, (caps not in original) I ADMIRE THAT HE HAS ALWAYS EMPHASIZED
  55. THE TESTABILITY AND FALSIFIABILITY OF HIS HYPOTHESES AND URGED THEIR
  56. SUBMISSION TO EMPIRICAL TESTS. UNLIKE MANY OTHERS WORKING ON RADICAL
  57. SCIENTIFIC THEORIES, DR. SARFATTI HAS ALWAYS BEEN CLEAR ABOUT WHAT EVIDENCE
  58. WOULD SHOW THAT HIS IDEAS WERE WRONG AND HAS TRIED VERY HARD TO GET
  59. EXPERIMENTALISTS TO CONDUCT THE APPROPRIATE TESTS.

  61. Dr. Sarfatti is very much an individualist, but I have always found him
  62. highly articulate and a warm personality...Obviously he has gone his own
  63. way (CERTAINLY AN ACADEMICALLY UNCONVENTIONAL PATH) in finding support for
  64. HIS WORK ON A THEORY WITH EXTRAORDINARY POTENTIAL FOR SCIENCE AND
  65. TECHNOLOGY. In the process he has attracted the attention of a wide
  66. spectrum of persons both within the science community AND GOVERNMENT.
  67. Clearly, he has taken A LARGE RISK IN PURSUING HIS HIGHLY NOVEL, CREATIVE,
  68. AND CONTROVERSIAL WORK; BUT HE HAS ALWAYS UNDERSTOOD THAT HE IS PLAYING FOR
  69. VERY LARGE STAKES. If he is right .... the rewards would be immense."

  73.            quantum information can be transferred instantaneously (or
  74. almost
  75.            so) from any part of the universe to any other, otherwise
  76.            how does one particle 'know' what happens when its twin
  77.            is measured?  (relativity theory is not violated because no
  78.            energy is transferred, only information.)  This is the view
  79.            of paraphysicist Jack Sarfatti, who heads a small San Francisco
  80.            organization called The Physics/Consciousness Research Group,
  81.            initially financed by Werner Erhard of est. (Sarfatti and Erhard
  82.            have since had a violent falling out, and Sarfatti is devoting
  83.            much of his time to attacking Erhard as a native 'fascist.')

  85.            of consciousness' in Jeffrey Mislove's wild book, _The Roots of
  86.            Consciousness_ (published by Random House in a fit of absence of
  87.            mind), and an interview with Sarfatti in _Oui_, March 1979.

  89.            (disclosure number 071165) on a device he hopes can send faster-
  90.            than-light messages to any part of the universe.

  113.       He also wrote in response to your press release about Uri Geller
  114.       "Note the clear implication in Sarfatti's release that having his
  115.       doctorate in physics made him specially qualified to rule out
  116.       deception".  The whole tone of the article is skeptical, and some
  117.       of the things you have stated above are actually quoted in the
  118.       article as your own words, the rest are portrayed as your
  119.       ideas, not Gardner's.   I wouldn't say the article is any kind
  120.       of stunning validation.
