- Cancel your travel plans, everyone. Thanks to the narrow-mindedness
- of a local county council, there won't be an international tournament
- this year.
-
- I just got the news last week in the latest Distance magazine, put
- out by Stephane Margeurite in Montreal. Essentially, what happened is
- that the people who are actually going to be running the tournament
- visited the proposed site in Chatham, Ontario, and determined that it
- was far too small to hold an international tournament. They spent
- some time scouting the area for alternate sites, and found two owned
- by the city of Chatham that would have been satisfactory, but wouldn't
- be available in April. Then they found a perfect field, measuring
- something like 350 by 150 meters. This field is owned by the County
- of Kent, not Chatham. And the county directors, in their much vaunted
- Southern Ontario wisdom (read Robertson Davies or John Kenneth
- Galbraith's personal accounts of the region for more info about the
- good upright denizens of Canada's bible belt), wouldn't allow the use
- of the field. I don't have any quotes, but they said the competitors
- would destroy the field and molest the local children.
-
- The local newspaper published an editorial thanking the directors
- for their great sagacity. After all, during boom times, who needs to
- worry about stuff like tourism to stimulate the economy? (A major GM
- plant not too far from the area is shutting down, and seeing how
- tobacco is a major crop in the region, I don't see much of a future
- there either.)
-
- I intend on sending a letter on company letterhead to the Kent
- County Council lambasting them for their stupidity. I would hope
- other people reading this who wish to advance boomeranging do so as
- well. I admit that I have more than a passing interest, since I was
- hoping to compete in Chatham.
