  11.   Cancel your travel plans, everyone.  Thanks to the narrow-mindedness
  12. of a local county council, there won't be an international tournament
  13. this year.

  15.   I just got the news last week in the latest Distance magazine, put
  16. out by Stephane Margeurite in Montreal.  Essentially, what happened is
  17. that the people who are actually going to be running the tournament
  18. visited the proposed site in Chatham, Ontario, and determined that it
  19. was far too small to hold an international tournament.  They spent
  20. some time scouting the area for alternate sites, and found two owned
  21. by the city of Chatham that would have been satisfactory, but wouldn't
  22. be available in April.  Then they found a perfect field, measuring
  23. something like 350 by 150 meters.  This field is owned by the County
  24. of Kent, not Chatham.  And the county directors, in their much vaunted
  25. Southern Ontario wisdom (read Robertson Davies or John Kenneth
  26. Galbraith's personal accounts of the region for more info about the
  27. good upright denizens of Canada's bible belt), wouldn't allow the use
  28. of the field.  I don't have any quotes, but they said the competitors
  29. would destroy the field and molest the local children.

  31.   The local newspaper published an editorial thanking the directors
  32. for their great sagacity.  After all, during boom times, who needs to
  33. worry about stuff like tourism to stimulate the economy?  (A major GM
  34. plant not too far from the area is shutting down, and seeing how
  35. tobacco is a major crop in the region, I don't see much of a future
  36. there either.)

  38.   I intend on sending a letter on company letterhead to the Kent
  39. County Council lambasting them for their stupidity.  I would hope
  40. other people reading this who wish to advance boomeranging do so as
  41. well.  I admit that I have more than a passing interest, since I was
  42. hoping to compete in Chatham.
