- Double Diamond (along with Red Barrel amongst others) were the great
- inventions of 60's brewing in Britain. Mass marketed, bland keg beers
- that would appeal to the masses. The idea was that the punters would
- go for the consistency and blandness, and the brewers could just brew
- the one beer in large "megakeggaries". They would then just slug it
- out between each other by advertising (somewhat along the lines, the
- cigarette companies do now).
- It didn't work ... the drinkers revolted and CAMRA was born. The brands
- became synonymous with awfulness and died (in Britain). However, it
- appears that they then found a ready market in the US :-)
- Red Barrel (and many of the others) are certainly not with us anymore
- here, but I believe Double Diamond was revamped and is available in
- bottles in the UK. It is now believed to be a pasteurised and filtered
- version of Allied's Ind Coope Burton Ale which is an excellent cask
- beer. Though this is confused as the latter is available, under it's
- own name, in cans.
- Cheers,
- Mark
