  19.   Technically, yes.  A dark ale.  Classically, all top fermenting beers
  20.   are refered to as ales.

  22.   Still, for example Michael Jackson separates stouts, porter, and
  23.   ale types (Pale Mild, Dark Mild, Bitter, Pale Ale etc, etc) on different
  24.   branches of his "The Family Tree of Beer Styles".

  26.   It makes things perhaps a bit more clear to do this rather than make
  27.   stouts a sub-branch of the ale types.

  29.   But, as mentioned above, classically all top fermenting beers are refered to
