- -> 5) Are female bettas radically less finned than the males? Could a
- -> female betta look like an orange sunburst plattie (which I'm
- -> beginning to suspect my alleged "betta" is) as my dealer says?
-
- First of all, I'm glad you're reading up on aquariums. From the sound
- of things, you may well know more than the person in the petstore! To
- answer the question about the betta, a female betta will have less
- extravagant finnage than the male, but the shape of her body will be the
- same as the male's. She definitely would not look like a sunburst
- platy. A platy has a rounder shorter body, while bettas have longer
- bodies.
-
- -> 7) Several people have suggested I vacuum my gravel. My dealer has
- -> not heard of this. How should I do this? Is it really necessary?
-
- It's just a cylinder about 2 inches in diameter, with a tube attached
- thru which you siphon water out of the tank into a bucket. But instead
- of just slurping water, you push the cylinder down into the gravel while
- holding your thumb over the bottom of the hose. When you release your
- thumb, you'll see grunge coming up the siphon out of the gravel. You
- repeat this process over and over, a few seconds for each time you stick
- it into a different location, until you've "vacuumed" a fair part of the
- fishdroppings out of your gravel. This will take a little practice, but
- soon you'll get to where you can vacuum a LOT of gravel without
- siphoning off more than a couple of gallons of water. This also
- accomplishes another good goal: a partial water change -- because you
- then have to pour some fresh (dechlorinated) water into the tank to
- replace what you siphoned out along with the grunge. Finally, don't
- just pour that "fishy" water down the drain. Pour it around your shrubs
- outdoors! They'll love you for it. It's a great fertilizer.
- I'll defer the rest of your questions to the experts on here, who
- can give you much better answers on things like cycling and nitrates and
- such.
