- Don't hold your breath waiting. While the Usenet represents a useful tool
- for discovering truth and information regarding what happens, it has not
- got a real chance to replace the current information structure. Usenet's
- greatest strength (many voices and viewpoints) is it's greatest weakness
- (too much noise, too many voices, lack of authentication by an institution
- we have been tuaght to trust.) The existing information distribution
- structure (TV news, newspapers, etc) has the advantage of presenting
- focused (single point-of-view) bit of information in packages small enough
- for people to easily understand and presented in a format which they have
- been taught to trust. It will not be easy to overcome this societal
- prejudice towards single-source information providers.
-
- The popularity of new TV programs in the US that use viewer provided video
- footage seems to indicate to me that American society (sorry, can't speak
- for the rest of the world :) is moving in the direction of multiple source
- information providers, but even these programs are edited and presented by
- the existing "information structure" in a format that is designed to
- provide the "authenticity" that the public needs. It seems to me that the
- hosts of these program must spend considerable effort to send out the
- message: "No, we are not making this up. This is real." [And on the other
- hand you have William Shatner and the Rescue 911 clones trying to present
- "dramatizations" as truth, go figure...]
