- I must protest. Listings for nearly all of VMS, plus all of the utilities that
- ship with it, can be purchased on CD-ROM for about $2200, and the legal
- requirements (you need to sign a source license agreement) haven't changed
- since this offering was introduced many years ago.
-
- No, you don't get compilable source for this price. But you certainly get
- enough information to help you add things to the system.
-
- Oh, and in case you were wondering, you can get the VMS-Alpha AXP listings kit
- for about the same price and the same legal procedures. This is an incredible
- bargain for anyone who wants to port code, particularly privileged stuff like
- device drivers, to Alpha! You can order it today. It exists; I've seen it --
- Two copies were on hand for perusal at the Fall DECUS Symposium last week.
-
- The hardest part about obtaining the VMS listings kit (VAX or Alpha), in fact,
- is often in getting your DEC salescritter to admit that they sell such a thing
- and to dig up the part number... years after its introduction, many salesfolks
- still don't believe that the kit exists. It may be salesfolks' misinformation
- that led you to believe that the legal requirements keep changing. I expect
- similar troubles in trying to order the VMS-AXP listings. Yet another case
- where DEC is doing the right thing but has trouble marketing it.
